About Judge Covarrubias

Judge Covarrubias was appointed as a Judge to the Superior Court of California County of Ventura in October 2002.  Prior to his appointment as Judge to the Superior Court, Judge Covarrubias served a Court Commissioner for nearly 9 years for the Ventura Superior Court.  Judge Covarrubias is currently assigned to the Juvenile Justice Court.   As a Judicial Officer Judge Covarrubias has been assigned to hear Family Law matters, Criminal matters, Juvenile court and a variety of other assignments such a Domestic Violence, Elder Abuse and Veteran’s court proceedings.

Judge Covarrubias was selected as the Co-Chair of the Working Group that developed the Strategic Language Access Plan for California Courts.  Said plan was approved by the Judicial Council of the State of California.  Judge Covarrubias also served as the Vice-chair of the Implementation Task Force for the Language Access Plan.

Judge Covarrubias has also served as a member of the California Judicial Councils Advisory Committee on Providing Access and Fairness to the Court and currently serves on said committee.

He also has served on the Judicial Council’s Court Interpreter Advisory Committee.

​

In 2015 Judge Covarrubias was a recipient of the Judicial Council’s Distinguished Service Award.

 

He has also been received other awards and recognitions, such as:

  • Ventura County Trial Lawyers Judge of the Year Award

  • Mexican American Bar Association of Ventura County President’s Award

  • Knights of Columbus Council #750 Public Safety Award

  • El Concilio Del Condado de Ventura Latino Leadership Award

  • Inducted it Oxnard High School Alumni Hall of Fame.

 

Judge Covarrubias received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from CSU Northridge in 1974.  He received his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School of Los Angeles, in 1977 and was admitted to the California State Bar in Dec. 1977.
